Induction Chemotherapy in the Treatment of Locally Advanced Breast Cancer

Abstract
Induction chemotherapy with a combination of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil (CMF) or a combination of 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin and cyclophosphamide (FAC) was used in 11 patients with stage III breast cancer. Two patients
were
in
stage IIIA and nine patients belonged to stage IIIB. Some response was present in all patients with eight patients(72.7%) showing partial response and no complete response.
Radical mastectomy or modified radical mastectomy was used as local therapy depending upon the local condition of the breast and in three patients, radiotherapy was added after surgry. CMF therapy was started within two weeks after the operative
therapy
in all patients and continued for six cycles. Tamoxifen was added to the regimen if estrogen receptor study was positive. One patient died of pulmonary metastasis at 44 months from the day of diagnosis and one developed skeletal metastasis at 76
months
but she is alive and well at the time of this report. Remaining nine patients are all alive without evidence of disease for 4 to 33 months (average 17.6 months, median follow up time 24.5 months)
